How I Use Google Search Console to Grow My Blog Traffic (Step-by-Step)
Posted on: June 18, 2025
When I started blogging, I thought I’d just write helpful posts and people would magically find them.
Turns out, Google doesn’t work on magic—it works on data. And the best part? Google gives you that data for free through something called Search Console.
This post is my no-jargon, real-life guide to using Google Search Console (GSC) to get more traffic to your blog—even if you don’t know SEO.
๐ What is Google Search Console?
It’s a free tool from Google that tells you:
- What people search before they land on your blog
- Which of your posts are getting clicks (and which aren’t)
- If Google is having trouble crawling or indexing your blog
It’s like getting a peek behind the scenes of how Google sees your site.
๐ Step 1: Connect Your Blog to GSC
If you haven’t already:
- Go to Google Search Console
- Click “Add Property”
- Select “URL Prefix” and enter your full blog URL (with https://)
- Use your Google account to verify—if you're on Blogger, it's instant.
Now Google can start tracking your site’s performance.
๐ Step 2: Check Your Performance Report
Click “Performance” in the left sidebar.
Here’s what you’ll see:
- Total Clicks: How many times people clicked on your blog in Google
- Total Impressions: How many times your blog was seen in search results
- CTR (Click-Through Rate): % of people who saw and clicked
- Average Position: Where you rank in Google (lower number = better)
What I do: I filter by “Last 28 days” and click the “Pages” tab to see which blog posts are getting clicks—and which aren’t.
๐ Step 3: Find the Keywords You’re Already Ranking For
Under the “Queries” tab, you’ll see the actual phrases people type to find your blog.
Example: If you wrote a blog post about morning routines, you might see queries like “simple morning routine for work” or “what is the best daily habit.”
These are gold. I take these keywords and:
- ๐ Add them naturally into the post (subheadings, bullet points)
- ๐ Create a follow-up blog post answering the exact question
๐งน Step 4: Fix Indexing Issues
Click on “Pages” in the left menu, then “View Data About Indexed Pages.”
You might see errors like:
- ⚠️ Excluded – Duplicate, not selected as canonical
- ⚠️ Crawled – Currently not indexed
- ๐ซ Blocked by robots.txt
What I do:
- Fix broken links or duplicated content
- Ensure I’m not blocking important pages in robots.txt
- Click “Inspect URL” → “Request Indexing” for pages not yet indexed
๐ Step 5: Track Progress (But Don’t Obsess)
I check GSC once a week to see:
- Which blogs are rising or dropping in search
- Which new queries I’m appearing for
- Whether any posts need updates or keyword tweaks
It’s not about chasing traffic—it’s about listening to what people are actually searching for, and adjusting your content to serve them better.
๐ Final Thoughts
You don’t need to be an SEO expert to grow your blog—you just need to pay attention.
Google Search Console is your cheat code. Use it to understand what’s working, what’s not, and where to focus next.
Trust me: The sooner you start using it, the sooner your blog starts growing (organically and consistently).
