How I Find Keywords for My Blog (Without Paying for Tools)

Posted on: June 26, 2025

I used to feel lost when someone said “You need to target better keywords.”

What keywords? How do I find them? And do I really need to buy those expensive SEO tools everyone talks about?

The answer is no. Today, I’ll show you exactly how I research blog topics that people are already searching for — using free tools and some common sense.

🔍 What Is a Keyword (Really)?

A keyword is just the exact phrase someone types into Google.

Examples:

  • “how to start a blog on blogger”
  • “easy lunch recipes without onion”
  • “best books for personal growth 2025”

Your goal is to write posts that answer those exact searches — in a clear, helpful way.

📌 My 5-Step Free Keyword Research Process

1. Use Google Auto-Suggest

Go to Google and start typing your blog topic. Don’t press enter. Just see what Google auto-suggests.

Example: Type “how to start a blog” → You’ll see suggestions like:

  • how to start a blog and make money
  • how to start a blog for free
  • how to start a blog on mobile

These are actual search terms people are using right now — write content around them!

2. Use “People Also Ask” Section

After searching on Google, scroll to the “People also ask” box. This is a goldmine of long-tail keyword questions.

Tip: Open a few of the questions — it will generate even more related ones.

3. Use AnswerThePublic

Go to AnswerThePublic and enter a simple topic like “blogging” or “homemade soap.” It will give you hundreds of question-style keywords people are actually searching.

Examples:

  • “Can I start a blog without coding?”
  • “What is the first step to start a blog?”

Pro Tip: Pick keywords that sound like they came from a real human — they’re more likely to rank in voice search too.

4. Check Forums, Reddit & Quora

Go to Reddit (search your topic + “site:reddit.com” on Google) or Quora, and look at the most common questions being asked.

These are real people asking real questions. If you can write a post answering them, you’re ahead of 90% of bloggers.

5. Use Google Trends

Head to Google Trends and compare a few search terms.

Example: Compare “AI tools for students” vs. “best productivity apps” — and write about what’s gaining interest.

You can even filter by country and time range (like “India – past 30 days”).

💡 Bonus Tip: Keyword Intent

Before choosing a keyword, ask: What is the person behind this search trying to do?

  • “how to start a blog” → looking for a guide (informational)
  • “best web hosting for bloggers” → looking to buy (commercial)
  • “blog name ideas for food blog” → creative help (navigational)

Match your post to the reader’s intention, not just the phrase.

📋 Final Checklist I Use Before Writing

  • ✅ Keyword is something I’d Google myself
  • ✅ It appears in Google auto-suggest or People Also Ask
  • ✅ I can add a unique angle or experience to it
  • ✅ It solves a problem or question clearly

🙌 Final Thoughts

Good keyword research isn’t about stuffing your blog with buzzwords. It’s about understanding what your readers are really searching for — and writing like a real human to help them.

And the best part? You don’t need a single paid tool to do that.
